On March 19, 1962--the feast of Saint Joseph--the Sisters of Saints Cyril and Methodius welcomed their first guests to the newly completed 100-bed facility, Maria Joseph Manor in Danville, Pennsylvania. Some of the guests arrived from a temporary residence in Middletown, Pennsylvania, which they shared with the Sisters. This earlier residence, known as Saint Ann's, was near the Jednota Orphanage where the Sisters had served.

As time passed, people referred to Maria Joseph Manor not as a "Home for the Aged" but as "The Home with a Heart." Since it's beginning, more than forty years ago, the Sisters and the staff have committed themselves to making Maria Joseph Manor a caring, welcoming home for it's residents. Soon applications for admission began to arrive, not only from Pennsylvania, but from other states where the Sisters taught or ministered. Within a few years the Manor was filled to capacity and applicants had to be turned away.

Recognizing the needs of a rapidly aging population, the Sisters went forward with plans to renovate Maria Joseph Manor into an assisted-living facility and to build additional facilities on the campus that presently include:

  • The Meadows, 100 independent living cottages and 12 townhouse units
  • Emmanuel, a nursing and rehabilitation center
  • Nazareth Memory Center for residents coping with dementia

Over the years, with God's blessing, the commitment of the Sisters, and the generous support of family and friends, Maria Joseph Manor has grown into an impressive Continuing Care Community that allows the Sisters to fulfill their mission of service to the sick and the aging.
